MYANMAR
Myanmar is the largest country in mainland South-East
Asia sharing borders with Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and
Thailand. It is twice the size of Vietnam and approximately
the size of France and Great Britain combined. It stretches
over 2000km from north to south and over 920km from east to
west at its widest points and a long coastline of over
2000km.
Myanmar enjoys a tropical climate with three general
seasons. The rainy season during the south-west monsoons
from mid-May to October followed by the dry cool season from
November to February, the ideal period to visit Myanmar. It
is hot and humid during the months of March to May before
the rains come.
Myanmar is a union of many nationalities as many as 135
groups with their own languages and dialects. The term
Myanmar embraces all nationalities including the Bamars, who
make up the majority (about 68%), the Chins, the Kachins,
the Kayins, the Mons, the Rakhines and the Shans. The
population of Myanmar is over 50 million and 80% of the
people embrace Theravada Buddhism.
Myanmar lies on the crossroad of two of the world's great
civilizations-China and India-but its culture is neither
that of India nor China exclusively, but a blend of both
interspersed with Myanmar native traits and characteristics.
Potentially, Myanmar is one of the richest countries in the
region in terms of natural resources as well as tourist
attractions. Early civilization dating back to 5th Century
and Myanmar greatness in history dating back to 11th century
have left a legacy of rich historical and cultural
heritages. Buddhism, which has flourished in Myanmar from
early century, has also left with numerous pagodas, temples,
monasteries and other religious monuments. World renown
Bagan, with over 2000 pagodas and temples, is the living
testimony to the rich history and culture of Myanmar.
Myanmar is also endowed by nature with geographical
diversity; from the snow-capped mountains in the far north,
cool and scenic Shan Plateau, the majestic Ayeyarwaddy River
flowing the dry plains of Mandalay and Bagan, picturesque
natural lakes and a long coastline with many unspoilt
beaches and archipelagos.
All these attractions combined with a simple hospitality of
Myanmar people and their typical Buddhist Asian way of life
make Myanmar a fascinating and exotic destination in Asia.

neon-lit clamour, crowded squalor and pace of modern
